Riise ready to return

The 23-year-old left back, who has proved disappointing after the initial optimism created by his first season at the club, has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines since Jamie Carragher returned to the Anfield fold from injury.

The former Monaco player's hopes of regaining a first-team spot were further hit by a minor injury that has kept him out of Liverpool's last two match-day squads.

The midweek international at Windsor Park, which will mark Lawrie Sanchez's first game as Northern Ireland manager, is seen by Gerard Houllier as a fine opportunity for Riise to regain his bustling best form.

"It is an injury that has kept him out of the squad for the two last games. Yesterday (Sunday) Riise was saved as he should play with us instead," said Riise's international manager Age Hareide

"Houllier told me that he wants Riise to play against Northern Ireland. He really needs to get match training now.

"I don't think Riise is far away from the Liverpool team. Houllier is a great admirer of Riise's skills.

"But Liverpool came into better form when John Arne was out of the team, then will it not be easy getting back into the team."
