The 22-year-old left-back sustained the knock during Norway's 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Spain in Wednesday's Euro 2004 qualifier and looks unlikely to recover in time for Saturday's all-important Premiership clash, according to Reds boss Gerard Houllier.
Houllier said: "John took a knock to his ankle playing for Norway against Spain and is a doubt for Middlesbrough."
