John Arne Riise has signed a new contract at Liverpool which will keep him at the club until 2009.

The 25-year-old Norwegian, a member of the team which won the Champions League final last summer, has followed fellow Istanbul heroes Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Jamie Carragher, Djimi Traore and Dietmar Hamann in extending their contracts at the club this season.

Reds boss manager Rafael Benitez said: "He's been a good servant, a good player to have around and a good team-mate.

"He can play in several positions for us and has been outstanding in the near two seasons I have been here.

"I am delighted he has extended his contract."

Riise joined Liverpool from Monaco during the summer of 2001 and has been a key member of the first-team squad ever since.

The left-sided Norway international can operate in midfield or defence and has so far scored 23 goals in 235 appearances during his time at Anfield.
