Riise welcomes competition

Rafael Benitez still wants to bring in another left-back, despite having a £6m bid for Gabriel Heinze turned down on Monday. The competiton for the left-back spot doesn't worry current occupant John Arne Riise as he believes it will raise his game.

"At a club like this you always know there is going to be competition for places in the team. All each player can do is concentrate, work hard, and try to show the manager that he is worth a place," the defender told the club's official website.

"In a club like this there are always rumours about who will come in, and every year new players arrive, whether left-back or anywhere.

"I just try to prove myself to the manager and I am feeling good at the moment. I have been here six years and I've played every season - hopefully it will be the same this year. I take competition as it comes - I am a person who likes it."
