Robbie takes graduate lessons from Owen and Gerrard

MOST young aspiring footballers can only dream about playing with mega-stars such as Michael Owen. Scots superkid Robbie Foy gets to do it just about every day.

The 16-year-old from Edinburgh is a Liverpool star in the making after two incredible years at the Merseyside giants.

Foy has been tipped for great things after a remarkable rise through the Anfield ranks - with some even suggesting a first-team game might not be too far away.

He's already an established international with the Scotland Under-19 side, even though most of his team-mates are two years older than him.

Foy may be too young for Berti Vogts right now but the striker is quick, has an eye for goal and doesn't seem fazed by training with European Footballer of the Year Owen, Steven Gerrard and the rest.

In fact, he revealed that by copying two of England's biggest players, the Scotland national side might just reap the benefit in the not too distant future.

Foy said: "Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard are my idols. Just to watch them training is an incredible learning experience for myself.

"All the youth players train together under Steve Heighway but the best lads get called up to train with the first-team squad sometimes.

"That's just incredible. Michael is a superb player and is perhaps the one I most look up to. Firstly, he is such a superb striker and is one of the best finishers in the world. Then off the park, he has kept his feet on the ground. He wasn't much older than I am now when it all happened to him.

"It is this kind of example which I want to follow in my career. You can only become a better player yourself by watching how someone like Michael trains, hits the ball and the way he moves on the park.

"Michael and Steve came through the academy just like me.

"All the senior players mix with the younger lads after training, playing pool and things like that and they are always good at handing out bits of advice.

"Liverpool is a great place to learn the game and I'm having a great time there."

Foy certainly seems to be taking in these words of wisdom. He has made incredible progress for a lad who, remember, is just past school-leaver age.

He made his debut for the Anfield second string while still 15 - in a Merseyside derby with Everton.

Foy said: "I've played for all the youth sides and the reserves as well. It's was great to get my debut against Everton and we even won the game 2-0.

"My aim is to progress in the reserves and try to play more games with them this season and stay with the Scotland set-up."

Foy is mature beyond his years, although having to move from the family home in Edinburgh forced him to grow up quickly.

He said: "As soon as I went to Anfield I felt that this was the right club for me. The people were great and that was important.

"When you walk into Anfield it's impossible to ignore the great history. There have been a lot of great Scottish players at Liverpool through the years so it would be great to follow in their footsteps."

Robbie Foy. Remember the name.
