Robson backs Gerrard for captaincy

Gerrard's Anfield team-mate Michael Owen currently takes the armband when the La Liga-bound star is not available for England, but Robson feels that the 23-year-old Liverpool midfielder should be the man to take responsibility.

Robson said: "I think the captain should be a defender or a midfielder because they have a greater influence.

"When David isn't there Steven would be my choice. He is now the key player for England."
