Robson staying hopeful

Just one point from games with Manchester City and Wolves has left the North East giants struggling to even clinch a UEFA Cup spot as they stand five points behind Liverpool in sixth place.

The notoriously poor travellers must now win both of their final games at Southampton and Liverpool if they are to finish in the top four, but their veteran coach refuses to give up on his Champions League dream.

Robson said: "I will bring all the motivational spirit I can muster for Wednesday and Saturday.

"If we win at Southampton what a glorious chance we have. If we don't, the dream will be over. Whatever is thrown at them the players must find the energy, be mentally tough, physically get on top of the opposition and play a good match.

"My message is listen, get your head up, your chin up. There are two games to play and in football you always have a chance. You have to believe that.

"Winning away is not something we have done much this season but it's time for a change. We have to have 100 per cent resolve. Not make mistakes and see two difficult games out. We have to win two away matches, two cup finals."
