The Liverpool boss explained the importance of resting his star player for big games, rather than risk burn out.

"Michael comes back buzzing when he has had a rest," he said. "He will play against Spartak and he will be a real threat to them.

"We need to ensure he is not burnt out and we have got so many games coming up in a short space of time. But what is good is that the team responds well, even without Michael.

"We rested him at Leeds and had Steven Gerrard and Emile out injured, but our squad is carefully put together to ensure we can overcome that sort of thing and still combat any team. To me, it is a good sign.

"It is backward thinking to feel that you have to play all the time. It is not like that any more. The most successful sides use their squad intelligently and ensure that no one is burnt out and that substitutes contribute as much as the starting 11."
