Roy pleased with win

The Reds won 3-0 for the second successive home game by beating Aston Villa yesterday and again produced a performance that delighted the manager.

"We thought we played well at Tottenham last week but got no points from it so it was important to win tonight on the back of that," said Hodgson.

"I suppose it was slightly more satisfying that we won tonight when so many players stood up to the plate and took responsibility in the absence of our three most recognised stars Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Jamie Carragher.

"The most pleasing aspect was the team effort. I thought the shape of the team was good throughout and we attacked and defended well.

"Of course in every win there are good individual performances but I still think it was more a triumph of team work more than individual brilliance."
