With Chris Kirkland out injured and Jerzy Dudek lacking confidence, Rafael Benitez is understood to be desperate for an experienced keeper to deputise in Champions League games if need be.

Villareal keeper Jose Reina could be that man. The 22-year old Spaniard would be eligible for Champions League games, having only played in the EFA Cup for the Primera club this season.
