Rush backs experience

Hyypia and Fowler were both left out of the games against Chelsea and PSV Eindhoven. While their omission obviously disappointed the pair, Ian Rush believes the professional manner in which they handled it will be a good example to the rest of the squad.

"They will be gutted they haven't been involved but you can be sure they'll respond to being left out positively. They're experienced enough to know sooner rather than later they'll be called upon again," said Rush.

"Both will set the right example to the younger lads, train as hard as ever and show determination to take the next opportunity when it comes. It never gets any easier as a player when you're not playing, but you understand it more when you're older.

"For managers, it's making youngsters understand why they've been rested which is trickier, which is why I'm sure Rafa Benitez will be looking for Hyypia and Fowler to show others how you should react.

"I can foresee a time in the not-too-distant when both are being praised for making an impressive return, because that's the kind of pros they are."
