Rush backs Owen record bid

Owen currently has nineteen goals in European competition for the Reds - just one behind Rush's record. The former Liverpool insists that he will be happy to see Owen take the record if such a title can help lift the player's ailing confidence.

Rush, speaking in the Liverpool Echo, said: "I will be more than happy on Thursday night if Michael does it. Of course strikers are selfish and want to keep hold of their records, but Michael is only one goal behind me and there is no doubt he is going to break it at some point.

"If he does it against Auxerre, it will mean Liverpool have a great chance of reaching the next round. Records are nice, but the most important thing is the club gets through."
