Rush backs Reds for French success

The former Welsh international forward, who is now an integral part of the Anfield coaching set-up, feels that Liverpool only have to look to their glorious past for inspiration ahead of a crucial UEFA Cup clash.

Rush said: "Liverpool have always travelled well in Europe. The most memorable example I think of was in 1981. There were quite a few worried faces after the first leg of the European Cup semi-final at Anfield against Bayern Munich.

"The game ended 0-0 and the Germans were the favourites to progress. But we scored a vital away goal in the return match, courtesy of Ray Kenney and went on to win the final against Real Madrid in Paris.

"The side's habit of scoring goals away in Europe has been maintained by Gerard Houllier's experienced continental campaigners and I'm backing the lads to score again in Marseille on Thursday.

"Everybody seems to think that 1-1 in the first leg was a bad result but I have every faith in them booking their place in the next round."
