Rafael benitez has brought in his own coaching staff from Spain but Rush is expected to be added to the staff this week, which is a good move by the new manager, says Smith.

He said: "It is perfectly understandable that the new Liverpool manager has brought in people from Spain to form his backroom team.

"This is a massive challenge for him in a new country and he's got to feel happy from the start. He will want the men around him who he knows best and who already have his trust.

"But I'm pleased to hear Ian Rush is expected to be promoted to a full time role at the club as a replacement for Sammy Lee.

"Sammy is proof that nice guys do sometimes succeed. He's not just left Anfield for the sake of it - the club wanted him to stay - but he is now climbing the soccer ladder with England and I wish him well.

"Rushie too is very dependable and straight. I'll be chuffed for him if this appointment is confirmed and, while I feel sorry for Phil Thompson, the club is entering a new era and I'm sure Rushie can offer a lot."
