Rush dismisses Charlton 'hiccup'

The former Welsh international, who is currently employed as a forwards coach at Anfield, believes that Liverpool's enterprising style of play will reap its rewards once the Reds can strike a balance between attack and defence.

Rush said: "I was sitting there with my feet up watching Liverpool leading 1-0 and I honestly thought we were going to knock in loads of goals against Charlton.

"Then we suffered what I can only describe as our first real hiccup of the season. No-one who watched the game can deny we played some superb attacking football and deserved at least a draw.

"I found myself thinking back to last season and the difference between our first away defeat to Middlesbrough and the loss at The Valley. It's fair to say when we lost at The Riverside 12 months ago we'd have been content with a draw. The contrast in how we played on Sunday was huge and even at 2-2 I was sure we'd go and win the game.

"This is the kind of football we want to be playing and it's sad we ended up losing after playing so well for most of the game. The finger has been pointed at the defence, but I've always been a believer in defending from the front and it's up to everyone to do their bit in those circumstances.

"This is a problem which I'm sure will be worked out because the players are learning all the time. It's natural for there to be a few transitional pains as we get used to playing in a more open way.

"Make no mistake, we'll be going for it again against Arsenal. If anyone will be happy with a draw before kick-off, it will be Arsene Wenger's side. Hopefully this time we'll get the balance between attack and defence right."
