With Michael Owen's future thought to be dependant on the club's ability to reach Europe's elite competition, Rush has insisted that Gerard Houllier's side will rise from the mediocrity of their current standing of eighth to claim a crucial place in the Premiership's top four.

Rush said: "To me Liverpool is the greatest club in the world and every top club wants to be playing in the Champions League next season. nd there's nothing to say they they won't. I think they will. It's a massive boost that Steven Gerrard has signed and you can see the way we are going - but it doesn't happen overnight."
