Rush has only just started

Since I retired as a player, I've received a lot of help and encouragement from others as I've moved into coaching," he told the Echo when picking up the Bill Shankly Memorial award.

"I know for certain I wouldn't be back working at Liverpool as a part-time striking coach, or coaching the Welsh Under 17s, if it wasn't for Gerard Houllier.

"I'm sure my return to Anfield last year influenced the judges when they were deciding who deserved the award this year, so in many ways the accolade has a lot to do with the Liverpool manager.

"I'm grateful so many people think I've made a good contribution to Merseyside football, but I think I've still a lot more to give.

"My playing days are over, but in terms of coaching I've only just started."

"I feel a bit sorry for Michael Owen. He's playing very well but the chances just aren't falling for him.

"He's playing a very unselfish role for the team at the moment because all opposing defences are double-marking him.

"Tactically, I think everyone can see why Gerard Houllier is looking to bring in another prolific striker to help Michael next season.

"Milan Baros, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Emile Heskey may all be available again soon, which will make a difference.

"And if Djibril Cisse signs, we'll have another player who will pre-occupy centrehalves and create more space for Michael."
