Rafael Benitez is meeting with Craig Bellamy to discuss a possible transfer. Liverpool legend Ian Rush says his countryman would be an excellent signing for the Reds.

"I'm delighted to hear Liverpool are interested in signing Craig," said Rush.

"He'll be a great signing because he's exactly the type of striker we need. He's got that extra quality the team has been lacking, which is lightning pace. For me, there's no risk at all.

"Liverpool had nothing to lose to be bidding for him and it's not a gamble at all. He's a top, top player, and in my opinion is the reason Blackburn qualified for Europe last season. His goal against Portsmouth last season was my goal of the season.

"Mark Hughes has never had a problem with him, and there's never been a problem at international level.

"It's true he can be hot-headed, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A good man-manager will ensure he channels that in the right way for the benefit of the team.

"When I see Craig Bellamy play, I see someone who is a winner and absolutely hates losing. That's an important quality in a player. You don't always wants players who have no character.

"I know he has a reputation for being Billy Big-time, but it won't be like that at Liverpool. He's been given a second chance at a top club, and there's none bigger and better than Liverpool.

"He'll have people around him who'll give him the right advice. Working with someone like Robbie Fowler will be good for him, because he'll know what it's like to have a second opportunity at the highest level and how important it is not to waste the chance.

"Besides, Rafa Benitez wouldn't want to sign him if he wasn't confident he can handle him.

"Every time I've met Craig when he was playing for other clubs, he'd come up to me, shake my hand and tell me I was his hero as a lad because he was a massive Liverpool supporter.

"So if he says he's joining the club he supports if he signs, I know he means it."
