Rush ready for crucial United test

With Gerard Houllier's side languishing in a disappointing eighth position in the Premiership table, the Welshman knows that defeat is simply not an option if Liverpool are to remain in contention for a Champions League spot this season.

Rush said: "There is already a sizeable gap emerging between the top three teams and the rest of the Premiership. But victory against Manchester United will see Liverpool close that gap considerably, with every Liverpudlian knowing that Liverpool are capable of beating United.

"We showed in Cardiff that we have their measure and United will definitely be worried about coming to Anfield. Victory would throw us right back into the Champions League chasing pack again - it's that big a game. If we can produce the performance and the result, who knows what the remainder of the season may hold?"
