Rush rues poor finishing

Sunday's frustrating 1-1 draw with Portsmouth was just the latest in a long line of hard-luck tales spun by Gerard Houllier after the Reds allowed a poor Portsmouth side to earn a replay they scarcely deserved.

Rush, who knows better than most the value of a goal, is onkly too aware that such profligacy must be brought to an end if Liverpool are to end a disappointing season on a high.

"Scoring in the first couple of minutes - as Michael Owen has done against Manchester City and Portsmouth - sets the fans up for a likely landslide. Even Harry Redknapp admitted on Sunday he feared his side could be in for a hiding.

"But when you do score so early in the match, it gives the opposition the best part of 85 minutes to get back into it if you can't kill the game off quickly.

"Strangely we seem to have gone completely full circle from this time last season. Then, we were going behind early on and having to chase matches. This time around we are starting well but not finishing teams off.

"Even the games we have lost at Anfield, against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, we have started strongly.

"It's just a question of being a little more decisive in front of goal when you are enjoying those good spells."
