Rush shocked by Carragher snub

The Liverpool legend believes that Carragher, who has made an impressive start to the season in both fullback positions, is currently the best defender available to the national team.

"I thought there must have been some kind of misprint when I read the names in the England squad this week. No Jamie Carragher?," said a perplexed Rush.

Has Sven Goran Eriksson decided he doesn't want the best defender in the country playing for him anymore?

"If there are really eight better English-born defenders in the Premiership, I must not have seen them yet.

"To say I was surprised Carra wasn't selected for the forthcoming Euro qualifiers is an understatement. No disrespect to the likes of Danny Mills but he's had trouble finding a club to play for this season. How can his form be compared to Carragher's? I can't see the sense in it.

"Wasn't it two internationals ago that Carra was one of four England captains against Serbia and Montenegro? Now he's not even in the 22 man squad. I can only assume Eriksson didn't see the derby last weekend.

"Whatever people think about Carragher's all-round abilities, his decision making on a purely defensive level is second to none. That's why there's always a place for him in the Liverpool defence. Still it's England's loss so maybe I shouldn't be too bothered."
