Sadio Mane Victim of Burglary as Liverpool Battled Bayern Munich in Champions League

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane appears to have been the victim of a burglary that happened while the Reds' number 10 was in action at Anfield against Bayern Munich in the first Champions League knockout round on Tuesday night.

Mane's house in the suburbs of Liverpool lay empty and thieves are believed to have made off with a number of items.

A report from BBC Sport explains that watches, mobile phones and car keys were among the things stolen, with the break-in said to have occurred at some point between 6pm and 11.45pm.

"We are appealing for anyone with information in relation to this burglary to please come forward and assist our inquiries," said Detective Inspector Phil Mahon of Merseyside Police.

"While the occupants were not present at the time of the incident this will no doubt be a distressing experience for them and I would ask the offenders to do the right thing and return the stolen items to the owner in any way possible.

"We know the watches in particular are of significant monetary value and I would also like to appeal to anyone who might have been offered the items for sale since the burglary to contact police."

Cruelly for Mane, this is not the first time he has had to pick up the pieces after a burglary. His house was targeted in November 2017 on a night when Liverpool were playing Maribor in Champions League. Nearby, Dejan Lovren's patio doors were also smashed that evening.

Champions League nights and international breaks have seen other Liverpool stars targeted in the past as criminals know houses will likely be empty, with players and families at the games.

Roberto Firmino, Pepe Reina, Daniel Agger, Jerzy Dudek, Dirk Kuyt, Peter Crouch, Jermaine Pennant and Steven Gerrard have all been burgled, some more than once, with jewellery, cars, clothes, entertainment equipment some of the things taken.

Dudek even lost his 2005 Champions League winner's medal as a result of one break-in.

The break-in at Gerrard's house in 2007 was particularly distressing as the Liverpool captain's wife and children were home at the time. Thieves, one of whom was jailed for more than seven years, reportedly threatened to 'take the kids' if they weren't presented with jewellery.
