It was rumoured over the weekend that Saints chairman Rupert Lowe had been in talks with Houllier over the manager's position at the club, but Lowe insists there is no truth in it.

"I have not left the country and I have not had talks with Houllier," said Lowe. "That is complete rubbish.

"This is the management team which will finish the season with Steve in charge and Christian working alongside him.

"Christian Damiano has great experience with both Fulham and Liverpool so he knows the English game.

"He has also worked in the French national set-up and has helped develop some top-class players such as Thierry Henry and Didier Deschamps.

"Steve has hired the man he believes to be best for the job and who has a reputation for playing attractive football.

"He is coming here because he sees an attractive squad of good players and he feels he can do a lot with them."
