The Finnish defender joined Liverpool from Dutch side Willem II for only £3 million in May 1999 and soon became an essential figure in the first team.

He soon formed a strong partnership with Stephane Henchoz who also joined in the summer of 1999 and was given the captain's armband in the absence of Jamie Redknapp and Robbie Fowler.

Sami's efforts were rewarded in 2001, when helped Liverpool to the Worthington Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Super Cup and Charity Shield.

With Redknapp and Fowler moving on to pastures new last season, Hyypia was established as the club captain and is essential to Gerard Houllier's plans to bring Premiership success back to Anfield.
