Westerveld returned to Anfield on Sunday to play in the Tsunami Soccer Aid game where he received a fantastic reception from the Kop. Westerveld said: "It was brilliant. It felt like I had never been away. The atmosphere was fantastic. It was great to hear the fans sing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' at the end."

Westerveld, who now plays his football in Spain, is fully aware of the talents of Rafael Benitez and Xabi Alonso, with whom he was a team-mate at Real Sociedad.

He said: "It has been a difficult season for Benitez. He has not been lucky with injuries. He can't pick his favourite team and when you are missing your important players it will always be difficult.

"Benitez is a big name in Spain. Everyone respects him. He did some great things with Valencia and I have all the confidence he will bring success to Liverpool as well.

"I saw the game against Everton and Liverpool were absolutely brilliant. They still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League. With the injuries they have had, to qualify for the Champions League will represent a good first season for Benitez.

"I spoke to Xabi just the other day and he is really enjoying his time here. He has surprised me a little because I thought he would need some time to adjust to the English style, but straight from the heart he had a big impact. He is a great player and hopefully he will bring back the success they want."
