The Dutch keeper, now with Real Sociedad in Spain, blames the Liverpool boss for failing to give confidence to the Liverpool no. 1.

"I feel really sorry for Dudek, he's having a hard time but he did really well last season," said Westerveld

"He made one mistake against Middlesbrough and he was under a lot of pressure, maybe because of the coach, and now he has started making mistakes every week.

"Houllier doesn't give him the confidence. As a coach you have to say `you are number one`, it`s different from saying `watch out, you make another mistake and we have to change you`."

Westerveld has been outspoken recently, partly because of the success his current team are having at the top of La Liga, yet those of us who doubted Houllier's decision to sell him may like to know that he scored an own goal against Barcelona on Sunday.
