Savage relishing Gerrard battle

The tenacious Welsh international has only the highest regard for his Anfield counterpart, who he believes to be one of the few English talents capable of making his mark in any team across the continent.

Savage, speaking in the Daily Post, said: " I always enjoy games against Gerard Houllier's side, because I think Steve Gerrard is a world-class player who has enjoyed another superb campaign.

"Had it not been for Thierry Henry, he would have had my vote for Player of the Season. He is a such key element, not only for Liverpool, but for England as well.

"There has already been some speculation that Manchester United could move for him in the summer. It doesn't surprise me.

"Gerrard is one of the few English players who would slot into in any side in the world. But my instincts tell me that his love for Merseyside in general - Liverpool in particular - will keep him at Anfield."
