The Reds lost to Chelsea 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The defeat was hard on Liverpool who had been the better side throughout.

John Durnin gave the Reds the lead but they were unable to reward their dominance with a second goal as Paul Walsh, Ian Rush, John Aldridge and Alan Kennedy were all thwarted by an excellent display from Chelsea goalkeeper Kevin Hitchcock.

Chelsea were defeated in the final by Leicester City which meant they were unable to equal Liverpool's record of Masters titles.
