The former England captain calmly converted a second-half penalty to earn the home side a deserved point at St James' Park, but his elation at netting his 13th goal of yet another hugely productive season was tempered by a belief that Bobby Robson's men missed a great chance to move into fouth place in the Premiership table.

Shearer said: "I think we can count ourselves unlucky not to have taken all three points in the second half. We gave away a stupid goal but in the second half we knew we would get chances and but for good goalkeeping we would have won the game."
