Shearer: It'll come down to the final day

Newcastle are currently level on points and goal difference with Liverpool, lying a place below the Reds on goals scored, but with a game in hand.

With the two teams currently matching each other's results on a game to game basis Shearer believes the Anfield match will decide the battle for fourth place.

"We are going for fourth, make no mistake about it. We believe we can get it," said Shearer.

"The results over the weekend raised eyebrows but it is going to be like that. It has been this tight for the last month and it will be until the season finishes.

"When there has been a chance for a team to go for fourth they have not taken it and if one side has won the other has won.

"Teams have not taken advantage and I will repeat what I said earlier in the season - it will go down to the final game of the season at Liverpool.

"I have seen nothing to change my mind but it's incredible how our results are mirroring Liverpool. Aston Villa are also hot on our heels and they are in form. It is going to be very tough. There is no doubt about that. "We have a couple of days off this week and we haven't had that for a while. I think we have deserved them.

"The hunger and desire are there and it has to be. We are playing top class sides and we have to show the desire. Chelsea are in the semi-final of the European Cup and we have just beaten them.

"Even a point against Chelsea would not have been good enough. To come back from one goal down to win shows the team spirit here. It's a result which should fill us with confidence ahead of the last four matches."
