Shearer: Smith is right man to partner Owen

Alan Shearer believes Leeds United's Alan Smith could be the right man to play alongside Michael Owen in the England set-up.

The Newcastle and former England hitman believes Sven Goran Eriksson has finally found the man to partner Owen after failed attempts with the likes of Emile Heskey and Robbie Fowler.

"Is he the one to be Michael Owen's regular partner? I don't see why not," said Shearer.

"Michael has not had an established partner for a while now. Emile Heskey, Robbie Fowler and others have been tried, and I'm not saying they are not doing their job, but it's been a while since someone has come in and made such an impact on their full debut as Alan Smith did at the weekend.

"I'm a big fan of his and have been for a while. I'm surprised he's not had the chance earlier. Alan's got a bit of devil in him. He's also got a good first touch, works hard and scores goals.

"He's got a big future to come and was the major plus from the friendly at the weekend. People go on about his temperament but you have got to have a nasty side and that shouldn't change. Believe me, defenders don't like the way he plays, or to play against him. He's got a real attitude which is something I like in a player."
