Shearer won't give up

The former England forward had predicted that his side's trip to Merseyside would decide the fourth and final Champions League spot, but he expects his colleagues to give their all even though their opponents are already confirmed in the top four.

Shearer said: "Fourth place and the Champions League has gone for us now and that's bitterly disappointing. But we still have the UEFA Cup to play for and that is the next best thing so that is what we have to aim for.

"Everyone knows the position. We are a point behind Aston Villa and it's out of our hands because, if they win against Manchester United, there is nothing we can do about it. But we have to pick ourselves up, there is no choice.

"We had a day off after the Southampton game, we'll train and then travel down to Liverpool to try our utmost to win the match. All we can do is give the same effort and commitment we did on Wednesday.

"We have to aim to win, but if we don't then we must make sure it's not for the want of trying or lack of effort."
