Sissoko wants cup glory

Sissoko's season, and possibly his career, looked to be over in February when he suffered a serious eye injury playing against Benfica in the Champions League.

Although Sissoko has returned to the first team he admits his eye is not 100% yet and he risks further injury by not wearing protective glasses like those worn by Edgar Davids. However, Sissoko says he will continue to risk injury if it means winning the FA Cup for Liverpool.

"It is true that I am taking a big risk by refusing to wear glasses, but I have no other option if I want to continue with my career because I have found it physically impossible to play in them," said the Mali international.

"The doctors have explained to me what the consequences could be if I took another blow in my eye, but it is something I am prepared to do. I just try not to think about the situation.

"I played two matches in them - and both times they started to steam up after about 10 minutes and I could not see properly. We have spoken to Spurs and taken advice about how Edgar Davids is able to play, but despite trying all makes and models they were not for me.

"I wore contact lens for the first time against Portsmouth. But that is to improve my vision and will not protect the eye. My sight is getting better every day, but my vision is probably still only about 80 per cent of what it was.

"I just get on with it. I am just happy to be playing again after what happened to me, so I do not think about any risk.

"I really appreciate the fact that I am playing again and to be going to the FA Cup Final is a fantastic feeling which I will savour. It will be a great moment for me because I came back into the team when we played at Birmingham in the Cup.

"I was asking myself a lot of questions before that game - whether I would be the same player as before, whether my vision would be OK, what would happen if I got another knock.

"All those things naturally come into your head. But the welcome I got from the fans was wonderful and it helped me to overcome some of those fears. For that I will always be grateful.

"Now I want to win the trophy and, who knows, maybe I will even score my first goal for Liverpool in the Final."
