"The next three months are going to be really crucial for Liverpool, as important as they have ever been, with the appointment of the new manager and the quality of players they bring in," he said.

"The press has been dominated by who should be the next manager but for me the most important thing is getting the right players. A manager can only improve a team a certain amount.

"We need good players to improve on the last three seasons. We need new players in each department, defence, midfield and attack."
