Smicer: Capello couldn't handle Houllier's tactics

Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer says that Gerard Houllier totally confused Fabio Capello with his tactics on Tuesday evening.

Houllier clearly won the mind game and not many do that when they take on Capello's teams.

"Roma's Fabio Capello is one of the best coaches in the world but he couldn't cope with the tactics of Gerard Houllier and Phil Thompson," said Smicer.

"I think it surprised Roma to see me and Jari Litmanen pushed so far forward behind Emile Heskey. It was a tactic that even surprised me.

"I kept changing positions with Jari and Roma didn't seem to be able to get to grips with us when we were going forward.

"It was a triumph for Gerard Houllier's thinking. To beat Roma, the Italian champions, like that is a great achievement."
