Smicer hoping to stay

Smicer has admitted he was disappointed to see Gerard Houllier leave the club but Vladi, whose contract has only 12 months left to run, hopes he does not follow the man who signed him out the door.

He said: "Gerard Houllier is the man who brought me here from Lens and I had a good relationship with him.

"There was a lot of pressure on the boss in the past months and lots of speculation. Unfortunately he lost his job but that's football life.

"Now we're all waiting to see who the new manager is going to be. There's lots of talk about Benitez but I don't know too much about the situation. I know he is a good coach with a good record with Valencia.

"As far as I'm concerned I want to stay here and show the new boss I deserve to play for Liverpool. I have another year to run on my contract and I want to stay here. We'll see what happens."

Smicer has been linked with a move to Southampton.
