Smicer revels in the Christmas spirit

With speculation concerning Gerard Houllier growing with every bad result and the frustrated jeers from an anxious Anfield faithful becoming more and more prevalent, the 29-year-old midfielder feels that a period of festive cheer was a welcome respite from the on-field pressures faced by an underachieving giant.

Smicer, speaking to the BBC, said: "We had our Christmas party and we were talking a little bit about how we play and everything.

"It wasn't just the boys at the party as our wives and girlfriends also came. It was not just about football, it was about everything and that was good. These occasions are good for team spirit. Every little bit helps."

The much-maligned former Lens schemer has reaped the rewards of a resuregence in team spirit with three goals - including two rare headers - in the month of December.

He added: "Sometimes I feel I've played well and I haven't scored, but the people don't give you credit for that.

"I have probably played better games for Liverpool, but if you don't score, it's not the same. When you score goals, everything looks better."
