Smicer tips Stevie to shine

Smicer, who will also be hoping to impress as the Czech's bid to live up to their dark horses billing, feels that only Liverpool's absence from last season's Champions League prevented the dynamic Gerrard from attaining the adoration he receives in England across the continent and beyond.

Smicer said: "Everyone in England knows how good Steven Gerrardis, but I'm not sure he's received the recognition he deserves across the rest of the world yet. I'm sure that's going to change now. The only reason it hasn't happened yet is because Liverpool weren't playing in the Champions League last season.

"The way he played last year, if we were in the Champions League everyone in Europe would be talking about him as one of the best players around.

"When you think he came third in the Player of the Year poll in England despite not being in the Champions League, it tells you how good he is.

"I think he was let down a bit by not being in that competition which is why it was so important for us to make sure we qualify next year.

"Playing in Euro 2004 will make up for his disappointment missing out on such a big competition with Liverpool. He is one of England's best players and there aren't many better in his position playing for any other country.

"If the Czech's have to play England at some point, I know I won't be looking forward to having to play against him."
