Smicer: We must beat Everton

With the Reds currently trailing both Everton and Chelsea in the race for a Champions League spot, Smicer is fully aware of the importance of the Merseyside derby for bothy Liverpool and Everton.

Smicer said:"We have to accept that Chelsea and Everton will keep going so we must keep the pressure on. That means the derby is very important to us.

"They are always important because of what it means to everyone connected with both clubs but this one is different because we are both battling for that Champions League spot.

"It's a crucial game for both teams and only the winner will have a realistic chance of getting there. We both need to win. A draw isn't good enough for either side and that adds to the occasion.

"Maybe it will work in our favour that we are away. The stadium will be full of Evertonians expecting their team to get at us, so if we can be solid and put on a good display it could go our way.

"It's going to be difficult, especially with both games being away from home, but if we win them both then we are right back in it. It is still a realistic target."
