The Czech international is currently in France for treatment on the injury but may need surgery which would not only mean the end of his season, but also rule him out of this summer's Euro 2004 finals in Portugal.

"It's a very frustrating time for me not being able to play," said Smicer. "I thought I was having a much better season for Liverpool and had a lot of good games. Now I just hope I can play a part before the end of the season.

"The treatment I had at Melwood hasn't worked so I've come to Paris, near the Clare-Fontaine Academy, to see if it helps. I've been here for two weeks and I'll stay one more week before coming back to Liverpool and starting training again.

"Obviously I hope I will avoid an operation. The injury has been causing a problem for most of the season and I've tried everything to solve the problem.

"If there is no improvement by the end of next week I'll probably have no choice but to have an operation and then I don't know if I will be able to play again this season. But I'm remaining optimistic.

"The treatment is going well and I will know more when I return to training if I can recover. I really want to get involved again."
