Smith pleased with Benitez appointment

Smith believes Benitez will be a huge success at Anfield, citing his first press conference as Liverpool manager as an example.

The Anfield Iron said: "Rafael Benitez struck the right note when he talked about the type of players he wanted at Anfield. Winners, yes. League winners, hopefully. But stars who cared about the club and wanted to do their utmost to bring success to Liverpool.

"The new boss did not go overboard to convince he was the saviour of the Reds, but came across as someone who is proud to be their manager and determined to make the job work.

"Benitez talked about Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen being part of the foundations and building a team around them. That is the hope of every fan. Having those two in the side would not be a bad start from a quality point of view.

"He has inherited a better side from Gerard Houllier than Houllier had when he took over from Roy Evans.

"You got the impression that the new boss' signings, whoever they are, will be quality purchases - and that will delight fans who have been disappointed with players who have come to Anfield in past two years and have not been good enough.

"There has been talk that his teams are defensive and counter-attacking, but when I saw Valencia beat us at Anfield at the start of last season I certainly did not feel that.

"The impression is of a new manager who is fully aware of joining a club steeped in great traditions and a great history, with a terrific record at home and abroad. That, plus the magnificent support he also referred to."
