United have already had two offers for the Leeds forward turned down, but Liverpool are preparing a £7.5m offer, £2m more than United.
Such an offer may depend upon whether the club accept Thaksin Shinawatra's £65m bid for a stake in the club, although an announcement on that is expected shortly.
