Smyth made his debut as a subsitute in the Reds' Carling Cup victory over Spurs and was an unused sub when Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by Burnley.
The timing of this injury is a cruel one for Liverpool fan Smyth. As an out and out striker Smyth was likely to feature in the squad while Baros was suspended and the likes of Mellor, Morientes, Cisse and Pongolle were injured.
