Smyth has a year remaining on his contract but was to be released from it by Gerard Houllier. However, Rafael Benitez wants the player to complete his contract so he can assess him and see if he is worth offering an extension.
"The new manager Rafael wants to have a look at Mark and assess him. Mark is now training full time at Melwood and has a year remaining on his contract." said reserve team boss Hugh McAuley.
