Souness hits back at Houllier

The controversial Blackburn manager - himself no stranger to the more violent aspects of the game as a tough-tackling midfielder - believes that Neill's two-footed lunge contained no malice.

Souness said: "You would have to have played the game to realise that these kind of things happen.

"It was reckless, but in football at this level tackles can be mis-timed and misjudged. In no way is Lucas Neill a dirty player. He had no intent to injure Jamie Carragher."
