Souness u-turn over Liverpool bid

Last updated : 27 August 2002 By Kop Talk News

Blackburn Rovers boss Graeme Souness has made a u-turn by admitting that Liverpool DID make a formal bid for winger Damien Duff.

"There has been no Liverpool bid - honest!"
Souness, his board and of course Liverpool, all denied reports that we had made an official approach but KopTalk, along with other good sources, stood firm during the speculation.

Press officer Ian Cotton denied the reports at the time via the club's own website. He said: "We have not made a bid for the player".

However, Souness has carried off a quicker u-turn than Phil Thompson's retraction that Robbie Fowler wasn't joining Leeds (within hours he was a Leeds player!) and has now revealed that there was after all a bid from Liverpool.

"Liverpool made a bid for Damien Duff last week after weeks of speculation but it was nowhere near good enough," said Souness.

"It wasn't even half of what we wanted. It took ten seconds for our chief executive John Williams to send back a fax."

Of course both sides will play with dates and words, so our bid may have been made after the club issued our denial...etc etc yawn yawn. It's obvious it happens, it's all part of the bluff in football to keep fees down or up and more importantly other clubs out of the picture but some fans are so naive that they believe anything tagged as 'official' as if set in stone.
