Spanish mindset key to defensive strength

Liverpool, along with Chelsea, have the best defensive record in the Premiership and have kept a record number of clean sheets this season. Goalkeeper Pepe Reina says the Reds' defensive success is down to the team's Spanish mentality.

"We have the Spanish mentality here at Liverpool and I don't get a lot of work to do because we are so strong defensively," said the Reds' new number one.

"At Barcelona and Villarreal I played in similar teams to here - teams that don't concede many goals and restrict the opposition to few chances.

"To not concede a goal for over 11 games in a row like we did is great, but it is down to the defensive system.

"Any credit for the success of the defence is down to the whole team rather than just me. It comes from the first attacker right back to me. It is the whole unit.

"It is easier for a team to defend this way if I can come out as far as possible. "We can hold a higher line and play further up the pitch.

"My role is to stay focused and play a little more advanced. I played this way for Villarreal and I'm comfortable with it.

"Scott Carson says it is a new method for him, but I have the advantage of knowing how it works from Spain and the manager knew I played like this before I came to Liverpool."
