We should never have been in that position on the final day of the season," he said. "We are a top-three side, not a fifth-placed side, and it was our fault why we were there.

"We had aspirations to win the league before the season and it adds to the disappointment that we started so well too.

"But no-one could have envisaged we'd have a run like we did around Christmas, it made the bad runs we'd had in previous seasons look positively short, but we came through it quite well and I think we can take credit for that.

"We know we are capable of doing much better. We showed at the start and the end of the season that we are capable of competing with the best.

"We need to start afresh. What happened could give us the impetus to move on."
