St John stands by comments

Thompson accused the Scotsman of holding a personal vendetta against Reds boss Gerard Houllier after St John told Sky Sports that Liverpool were currently in their worst ever season. St John has refuted this claim - though he insists his criticism of the Liverpool team is just.

St John, speaking in the Liverpool Echo, said: "I didn't actually say it was the worst Liverpool side in living memory. I said it was the worst season. We have had the worst run of results in 50 years. For me that constitutes the worst season.

"Thommo should remember his previous job as a pundit for Sky Sports when he had an opinion on everything. Former players working in the media are only doing the same, giving an honest assessment of what they see.

"I don't think there is a hidden agenda, certainly not from me. We just want the supporters to have a team they can be proud of. If Liverpool are not playing good attacking football, then we have to say what we think.

"My advice to Phil Thompson is to do what you are getting paid to do and that is coaching - starting with shooting practice."
