But the Liverpool skipper's feelings have made him more determined than ever to go and win it this time around.

"I've seen John Terry lift it for the last two years and, while I've been happy for him because he's a good mate, there is also a bit of jealousy there because I want to do the same," he said.

"It's important for me but it's more important for a club like Liverpool to be champions again.

"It's been too long for a club like this and it hasn't been nice seeing other teams involved in the title race while we've fallen too far behind.

"It's a very painful thing for a Liverpool captain to admit, but that's why the title would mean everything for me.

"We've a realistic chance and if we keepimproving as quickly as we did last year ten this could be our time."
